Determination of visible proximity sharpness
The visible proximity sharpness is usually determined in presbyopia, in checking the accommodation or in the deficiency of the ocular lens (aphakia). The most commonly used specially designed reading boards with certain signs-optotypes.
The most famous are Jager’s reading boards, where text and numbers are on every row of different sizes. There are also Jager 1 boards for reading at a distance of 25 cm and Jager 5 for reading at a distance of 50 cm.
The boards are placed at the required distance (usually at 40 cm or at the required working distance) and then the patient is asked what line he is reading. The obtained results are recorded.
